Can upgrading an OS make programs, etc run/load faster? My OS is Win98se.

The speed of your computer is dependent on the hardware, particularly the central processing unit.

Software, including the O/S, cannot increase the overall speed of your machine although up-to-date software may appear as though it is doing so.

More RAM may help depending on how much you already have (512 MB limit with W98).

Go to Start Msconfig/startup tab remove any ticks that are not needed as these take up resources, and will slow your boot and use memory that other programs could use. Things to look for are"Microsoft fast find" any Microsoft office items can be stopped from starting when you boot as these are still available manually

oo-er -pops- - of course it could make the overall system go faster, you even said so yourself "make it appear to go faster" is exactly what it says - going faster!

However, at a practical level, upgrading between Windows versions from 98SE onwards is actually more likely to make it go slower, as they tend to add more overheads for the system to carry out.
