Making my own network so which wifi?

Hi all,
I've decided to take the plunge and create my own home network. This will be based around a server running Redhat 9 (new to me, should be fun) which will be connected to NTL broadband.
The bits are on order (just waiting for Redhat to be in stock) and I'll be starting the build
Now the thing is which is the best method of joining this server with the other two PC's in the house. I've decided to use Linksys equipment useing the new 54g but i'm not sure whether to use a router or just an access point. I know i may be being a bit dumb, It's just that there seems so many different connections to choose from. It's a nightmare! lol
