making an external hard drive

i want a new hard drive but i do not have enough space to fit an internal so i need to get an external.the problem is that they are expensive so i was wonderin is it cheaper to build one myself using a external case nd an internal hard drive.also is it hard to build it?thanks in advance

I bought a couple of s/hand laptop hard drives for about £10 each, and a pair of (new) USB 2 cases for them, these were also about a tenner each.

I got them on Ebay. I've been using them for over a year now.

No problem making them up, just put the drive in the case and screw the top on.

There are usually plenty of laptop drives on Ebay as people fit larger ones in their laptop, then don't have a use for the old one.

Just buy a caddy (with usb2 or firewire or both) for the size of hdd you want. The caddy will come with power and IDE connector, some even with fans. I use one for backup.
