Maintenance Wizard, Wizardry

I'm running a six-year-old Windows `98 computer and is running quite well if not very fast with just 310mb memory. no gaming or anything that might overload the system. In order to continue my trouble free computing I ran the `Maintenance Wizard` which started out with the `hard disk scan`. this was but a short time in operaion when there was a complete halt to all operations. I had to reboot my computer. I had but 10% defrag completed when again there was a freeze. Naturally I would wish to continue to scan my hard disk and defrag. What's the matter?
On Board, AVG - Skybot - CCleaner.

With Win 98 I would suggest that any defrag, checkdisk operation, and so forth, should be carried out in safe mode.
