'low on virtual memory'

  Grambo 15:40 12 Jul 06

I have the above message appear on my screen. Also says 'windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file'.
Needless to say the pc grinds to a halt at this stage and all appears well after reboot. Of course all is not well and am looking for advise to get round this problem.

assuming you are running XP, go to control panel-system-advanced-performance-settings-advanced, click on the change button in the virtual memory box,

Click on custom size, and change both the settings in the initial and maximum size, to 768Mb. Then click on set and apply.

This should stabilize your system a bit.

Virtual memory is just hard drive space that your pc uses when there is not enought RAM.
Go and buy some more RAM and increase it to at least 512mb. This will reduce the times when the pc need to use virtual memory. Also defrag your hard drive and make sure its not too full.
