Lost USB connection

Some time ago I moved my machine from one place to another. To do this I disconnected everything and then reconnected again when the machine as where i wanted to be.
When I switched on everything worked as expected except I appeared to have lost a USP port - the machine recognises only one of two.
I seem to recall rading in PC Advisor ages ago, the way to recover a port in such an event, but I can't locate this in my back issues. Any ideas?
I am running windows 98.
