Lost sound on Laptop

I have just lost the sound on my Laptop, its running XP. Yesterday I was fiddling with the sound settings for a microphone but can't see how I have disabled the sound, I've looked at the Control Panel and everything seems normal.

There are no speakers plugged in, just the onboard ones, and there is no volume control for them.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sounds and Audio devices - Audio - make sure your sound equipment is indicated in the box.

also check you have not muted sound in volume settings and maybe mute button on keyboard or next to sound sockets.

In the audio section there is no choice of sound devices, just the Realtek AC97 audio.

Check for both the other suggestions.

Any red exclamation marks against the AC97 in device manager?

Volume control -options -properties -playback -make sure all boxes are ticked

Nothing in the device manager under sound,

Under volume controls there were options not ticked, but I rectified that but the problem persists.

I don't know which part it was, but I rebooted the machine and now it works, so big thanks :)
