Lost photos

I had a lot of photos and music on an external hard drive. These have suddenly disappeared [possibly following a routine backup?]. Anyone know why they might have gone [the My Pictures and My Music folders are still there, only empty!] Or, more importantly, how I can get them back?
Windows XP Home SP2.

When you did your last backup were the My Music and My Pictures folders on your main drive empty?

If so, then I wonder whether these have overwritten the ones on your external drive.

Provided you have not written to the drive since the loss, you maybe able to recover the data.

Also try a quick search on the drive by typing .JPG

Also Recuva from Piriform and very reliable source that made Ccleaner, click here

Thanks for all your help. looks like my external hard drive has died. Fortunately I found a backup on a partition of my internal drive, so no harm done.
Thanks again to all.
