lost edit32

I am running Windows98SE. I have been attacked by the LITMUS virus - it infected windows\edit32\edit32.exe. Norton AV spotted it but was unable to quarantine/repair/delete/ignore it. I deleted the file in the course of a reboot and I think I am clean again. During the reboot I was warned of horrendous consequences of the loss of edit32 ("you will not be able to run applications") but I seem to be working normally so far.

What does edit32 do?, is it important, and please, how do I get it back (I have my installation disc)

Did you have Gator or a text editor on your PC? I doubt it is important or you would be getting many error messages. However if you wish to re install it if Windows requires it insert the Win 98 CD into your rom and run SFC. (System File Checker).

Virus often give themselves names that are similar to or the same as windows.

If your system is now clean & not showing any problems go to start click on run type in msconfig & go to the startup tab.

Look for a line with the name edit32 and untick the box infront of it.

This should stop the system looking for the now removed file on loading.
