Lost DVD Writer - no driver in 'my computer'

Hi
I took out an old drive that I never used on my PC leaving my DVD writer alone but I've now lost access to my DVD writer.

when I go to 'my computer' it will only list my HD's (I've got two) but I've lost drive D.

I've checked the IDE cable and it's fine (I even tried changing the jumpers but it doesn't make any difference).

My HD's are on a seperate IDE cable (the ribbon cables) to the DVD writer so my jumper was set to Master but I've tried it to slave (just in case I got that wrong) but still no drive.

I've tried rolling back my driver - nothing. I've tried updating driver - deleting driver - downloading a new driver - nothing!!!

I've even tried going back to a previous restore point but it says it can't and no changes have been made to my computer - I have no idea why this is as I do make new restore points myself (and the PC makes it's own as well!!)

I'm completely confused now - I have no drives at all!!!
Help - I really need to back up my stuff - I don't have a recovery or start up disc as this is a refurbished PC and it asked me to make one when I first got it but I didn't have any disc so I said no thinking I could do it later but I can't !!!
(I've asked on here before about creating one and got sent a link but couldn't get it to work!(

There is no help & support for this for some reason and it comes up with code 39 - corrupt file? but why can't I just reinstall it or delete it???

any help on how to get my Drive back would be gratefully received.

Thanks
