"Lost" 4 Gb

Using XP, I've suddenly lost 4Gb of space. When I open "Documents and Settings" my Name Folder shows that it contains 4.40 Gb but when I open it there are subfolders containing much less than 1 Gb. Windows won't allow me to delete the Main folder. I suspect that there are Temp files in there somewhere containing video info that I would like to delete and recover the space, any suggestions?

When I go to "Properties" there is a green square in read only files (not a check mark) and Hidden also has no check mark, just a blank box.

There are viruses currently in circulation which append themselves to files making them appear much larger than they really are. Do you have an up to date virus scan programme?

Yep, using Avast.

Salinger,

I take it you are showing hidden and system file folders, From Tool - Folder options - View.

Don't think so, see above, should I put a "tick" in read only and Hidden?
