loss of internet connection

greetings. i am having trouble with my internet connection to my computer. i use a cable modem broadband connection with ntl. my problem is occurring to often for my liking,i am downloading a film from the net when within ten minutes my connection to the net is lost,this is driving me mad all my supplier can say is restart my computer this does help temporarely or delete temp files well i have done this and the problem continues.can anyone advise me how to stop this happening all the time i have a 4meg down load speed with no usage limits. my computer has windows xp service pack 2 updated as needed.any help would be appreciated. thankyou

What modem do you have?

next time you speak to them ask them what your Downstream SNR is. It should be >30db.

If you have a Terayon Terajet modem I would bet that your SNR is low and the modem is dropping in and out of service.

They should come and sort out your install and get your SNR >33dB, but they will probably just change out your modem for a more resilient model.
