Loss of Hard Drive Free Space

I have a 4 Gb hard drive which I normally keep to aprox 1 Gb free space, I have suddenly lost 500 Mb of this free space. I have checked all files created or modified and can find nothing significant to explain this loss. I recently was forced to abort a defrag of the hard drive and subsequently shut down. On carrying out my next defrag it took over two hours as it wanted to reposition everything after 50%. Could this be the cause of my loss. I am on 98SE with a 233 Mhz processor

Run scandisk, you may have a lot of lost file fragments from aborted defrag.

Thanks Dekay I ran scandisk slight improvement, I then ran scan clean up and found the offending files in the temporary file folder. Problem now resolved
