Loss of audio output

I am using Win 7 64 bit and have suddenly lost audio output and now input. Windows tells me that the headphones are not connected even though they are plugged in at the recommended jack. I cannot get sound from the monitor speakers either.

Win 7 help is not as easy to use as Win XP and delving into it has not provided any results. I am told that all devices are working properly even though I can't hear anything.

Any thoughts/suggestions for things to check or try would be appreciated.

Mmmmm...... had this problem this morning myself. Win 7 showed all to be working OK i.e. speakers connected and sound being generated on the level meters. On old fashioned reboot cured the prob.

Problem now solved by re-installing Win 7 as upgrade. Must have done something that deleted audio but I can't think what it was!!
