Looks like a duff CD/DVD drive.

I know that they don't cost the earth these days, but before I rush out to buy a new one ...

My DVD/CD ROM drive has suddenly stopped recognising that there is a disk (any disk) in it. I am told that that either I should insert a disk, or that the disk is not formatted. Is this a sign that it has truly given up the ghost? Are there any checks that I can carry out before I consign it to the scrap heap?

Thanks

Mike

Go to device manager and Remove the drive. Shut down the pc and check that all the cables, both at the drive and the motherboard, are tightly fitted.

Start up again and see if that makes a difference.

Finally, a head cleaning CD might help if the laser lens has become dirty.

If you do replace it, you can get one that reads and writes every known format at high speed. See: click here
