Long file names

I have been trying to back-up my C-drive to another drive, but get error message 'file names too long'. I think this is due to my having several cases of folders within folders, which makes the overall file name much longer than the name I give it. Is there any way around this please? I thought this was a problem with earlier versions of Windows, not XP that I am now using. Any advice much appreciated, thankyou.

There's a 255 character limit on the file path.

The easiest way to get round this is the compress the backup...

alan14, thankyou for the advice, but how do I compress the back-up? I have not heard of this before.
