Logitech Quickcam Messenger causes 99% CPU usage

I have just bought and installed a new Logitech Quickcam Messenger for use with MSN Messnger.

I am running Win 98.

The camera seems to work ok - Picture good etc., but when I switch it on, either stand alone or as part of a messenger conversation, the cpu usage jumps to 99%, my system slows to a crawl and the whole thing is painful. I have closed just about everything that is running in the background but this makes little difference.

My system meets all of the min requirements specified on the box.

Is there anything I can do? Is this the norm?
