Logitech Headset Problem

Yesterday I bought and installed a Logitech E3500 webcam, which came with a Logitech headset. The video capture works, as does the mike built into the camera, as does the small boom mike on the headset. What doesn't work is the headphone part of the headset. The two small jack plugs are inserted into the front colour coded sockets of the computer. The sound works perfectly through the main speakers when they are on but when off nothing comes through the headphones at all. Can't find anything relevant in this site's archive, and the Logitech support number produced nothing of value. I have removed the Logitech software and reinstalled it [latest version] but still no good. Suggestions would be appreciated.

if you go to device manager do you have any yellow marks?also if they are listed in device manager try updating the drivers.
