Logical Network Drive Mapping

On a Windows XP Professional machine I need to map two folders on my c: drive as logical network drives: y: and z:.

I did this a few weeks ago by right clicking on the folder in Windows Explorer and selecting properties, then setting up Sharing with full access.

However, for some reason (?) the y: and z: mapping remains but the route is unavailable. On looking at the properties of the folders again, the sharing has become disabled. On re-establishing sharing the logical drives do not come back online and after deleting the logical drives the folders are not given in the list of folders available to map.
