Local Area Connection

Just curious to know if it is necessary to open the network connections on the Local Area Connection logo which can be found on the bottom bar of XP.
If I hold the cursor over the picture it reads 'Local Area Connection' 'A network cable is unplugged'.

unless you have a home network or are using broadband via ethernet connection then you dont need this.

click control panel/network connections/properties and take the tick out of the box that says"show icon in notification area when connected"
