Loads of 'undeliverable' messages

A friend of mine is receiving dozens of 'your message is undeliverable' messages. These are not messages which he has sent.

My first thought was that a virus had hijacked his address book, but AVG finds nothing.

Adaware found no trojans.

We have emptied temp internet files.

I'm suggesting Zonealarm, so that he can see whether another program is sending emails silently, but after the scans, I do not see how.

Could the emails be emanating from elsewhere, but quoting his address as the 'return'?

He is in south London, I'm in the midlands. He is dyslexic and not confident with PC issues, hence he's asked me to advise. Where could I suggest next?

it sounds very much as if your friend is running some sort of extra open host proxy server (even unknown) and it is being hijacked by a spammer using his mail addy and because it is a genuine addy he gets the bounces,

Thank you for the link VoG.

I thought I'd search on 'undeliverable' - but the thread eluded me.
