loading recovery discs

Hello all,

I'm enquiring about this on behalf of a friend. He has just rang and explained the following...

He said he has been infected with spyware for ages and tried Spybot Search and Destroy, but this didn't get rid of his gremlins. So he decided to restore his computer back to the factory settings and use the recovery discs to re-install XP. He backed up all his important files to CD prior to this.

This is what he said he done. Switched his PC off (Compact Presario 900) and switched it back on with recovery disc 1 in the drive. The computer then launches a wizard and asks him does he want to revert to factory settings, losing all info etc. He clicked yes, he then goes on to explain that he gets to disc 3 of 4 when an error message appears (error number 1802) with the warning (image file is invalid or corrupted) when he clicks OK he is returned to a blank screen with a DOS prompt. If he turns the computer off and then on again, he gets the message...cannot find operating system.

Can anyone suggest what the problem is here please. I think his laptop is still under warranty - is it worth him just sending it back, or can it easily be fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards
