Hi all i have an annoying problem with one of me drives, when i insert a cd into the drive the light on the front flashes when the drive door closes but from there on in i can get nothing from it, it will not read any disc allso willnot write to a disc. I have been into device manager and uninstalled the drive so the next time i booted windows found new hardware and told me the drive is now ready for use but the same problem was there. The drive is a Lite-On LTR-40125S CDRW Drive i have been to the Lieon website and downloaded a flash for the drive allso to no avail,
I would be gratefull for any help on this.

Is the drive in question listed in My Computer ?
Any error codes ?

  skidzy 21:33 24 Jun 07

The first steps are as HCOOH has posted, try these first.

If still no joy:

Missing cd/dvd drives can be normally associated with the removal of burning software such as Nero/Roxio/Sonic/Easy CD Creator etc.
And not showing the drive in My Computer.

Try the below link ,if still no luck follow the Procedure of removing the upper and lower filters.

If no joy with the above fix,try the Microsoft Guided Help

click here scroll down to the Guided help download and follow the instructions.

If still no joy, follow the manual fix below.

If you have further any error codes, please post them.

Restore Missing CD/Dvd Drives

Missing cd/dvd drive
If it is showing an error code:
Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
, delete the drive.

Then follow these directions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters: (might want to print this out)

1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key ( if Vista Start search or windows+R )
2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or
3. clicking the "+" next to it.)
4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer

.If in any doubt editing the registry, please create a System Restore point first and also backup your registry....The guidedhelp from Microsoft on backing up the registry is a good lesson for anyone to learn. click here

Creating a System Restore point:

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore…follow the prompts.

Hi all and sorry about the delay in getting back to you thanks skidzy for a very detaild and helpful reply.I had allready tried the atuoplay fix HCOOH but with try the reset DMA in a bit.In answer to your othe questions the drive is listed and recognised in my comp and has not given up any error codes the light on the drive shows its active when you open/close the drive it just wont read/write and no light after the door has shut. In device manager there are no question marks listed and says this device is working,as i have said i have maually unplugged the ribbon cable from the drive and rebooted/shut down and replugged the drive in and the computer went through its found new hardware thing and allso uninstalled the device in devise manager.
I am useing Nero i will take it off later and see if that helps ifnot ill try thr registry. Could it be that the laser has just failed?
Thanks to all for your help.

Yes it could be the laser has failed, but do try the options availible first.

Even if device manager says all is ok,you may still need to use the registry fix.

Have you actually updated the firmware to the drive,i assume this is what you meant by flashing the drive.

  Sparkly 07:09 25 Jun 07

Yes updated the firmware to the drive yesterday (ditto) i will try your other recamondations later after work and get back to you.
Thanks again.
