Linux Mint 13 (Maya) sound issue

Been running Mint 11(Katya) with no problems but (stupidly?) decided to upgrade to Mint 13 (Maya - Mate 32-bit) with it being LTS. I now find that any volume setting above 75% gives me distorted sound. I've fiddled with various settings without success. I've tried the 14 and 15 distros (Mate, Cinnammon, KDE) with the same result. Anyone any thoughts please?

It's a known issue(?) in Linux Mint, which allows overdrive (100%+).

The solution is to set your volume to 100% on your speaker icon, then open up the sound preferences and reduce the "Master" volume until the distortion has disappeared.

Thanks Last Chip I'd already done that but wondered if there was a better solution. Wasn't aware it was a 'known issue'. Eh ho, onwards and backwards. Thanks again
