Line speed

If I hover the mouse over the two little screens in the XP notification Area/Systray, Speed is shown in mbs. What is this an indication of & where is it measured? I ask because before I removed the bell wire it showed 2.9mbs; as soon as I'd disconnected the wire it showed 4.5mbs. My download speed seems to have improved but various tests give varying results depending on the test, route & time.

I believe it counts the number of packets that are sent and received and thus works out the speed.
You could try an online speed test click here
This works by send you a file of a known size.

PS - hovering the mouse over the two little screens in the System Tray does not show your speed - it only shows the speed of your local connection, pc to router.
