On line icon missing

I am using a new computer with XP loaded. On my old Windows 98 computer a double monitor icon was loaded in the notification area of the task box whenever I was on line. This is missing from my XP set up so it is difficult to establish if your connection is still active or not. Am I missing something obvious, or is it customisable.

Open up Control Panel, and select Classic View on the left if necessary. Find Network Conections and open it. The window should change to your network connections.

Right-click on your dial-up network name (or LAN if broadband is installed) and select Properties.

From the box that appears, check the box at the bottom to say "Show icon in notification area when connected". Click OK, and it'll work as you're used to it.
