Limits on Google mail recipients

Hi, until recently I had no problem sending an e-mail to many recipients, like this: send to self, then BCC, some yahoo (and other) groups of people and some individuals in 2 groups in my address book. All received, no problem. I have not changed ny practise in any way but the vast majority seem to be not received because "too many recipients" and/or "too many returned" - I have even been locked out for 24 hours and I fear it may happen again because I just don't understand what has happened. I've read their "help" section over and over and it seems to allow 500 (I am well within that) but it doesn't seem to say anything about the number that can be returned (or why?) before they lock you out again. Can someone please set me on the path again. cheers.
