limited use broadband packages

I note that the new Bt package has with others a usage limitation after which surcharges apply. X pence per minute is clear but excess charges after say 1GB a month are not. Can anyone tell me what approximately a GB of use amounts to in practical terms. My suspicious nature make me wonder if schemes like these are dressing up a dear product as a bargain it is not.

The 1GB limit is the total transfer of data between your PC and the internet- it applies to uploads and downloads.

I see references to SATA, S-ATA and RAID in articles about harddrives. What do those letters stand for and which should I look for, or doesn't it make a lot of difference? Are there any harddrive types that are obsolesent?
