License Validation problem with XP Pro

Hello all,

I've recently had to re-format a machine, due to hardware changes - however, this isn't the first time that such a thing has been done and now on boot up it produces a screen saying that it's having problems validating the license - which is a new one on me... It worked fine until I activated it over the internet yesterday.

The actual message is:

A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license of this computer.

Error code: 0X80040017

Apparently this occurs while trying to log onto someones profile, it says "activating your settings" and then this message pops up, clicking okay makes the system reboot.

Any ideas?

try a google search for the error code?

I'm not sure, but I think that if you make several hardware changes XP thinks that you've installed it on another PC and you may have to re-register it. I'm sure someone will come back and confirm if this is right or not.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies, but I've been pointed towards an article: click here

Hopefully it'll work!

Let us know if it does.

Works just fine - which is always good

Thanks for the suggestions though
