Left hand speaker problem

Desk top PC running XP home.

Here's a peculiar problem for you to chew over. I have four satellite speakers connected by means of a two way jack plug. Today however when I change the music source or shut down and reboot, both left speakers refuse work, until I unplug the jack plug from the back of the PC, and then plug it back in again, then they come on.
This only started today until now they have been working OK. I've checked all the settings and there is nothing wrong there. Apart from buying another two way jack plug and trying that, I'm stumped as to what is wrong????
The PC is only three months old.

sounds as if the drivers have gone a little funny

Is it a dedicated sound card or onboard?

If so what card or what motherboard chipset is it?

You could try system restore to a point before the odd behaviour started.

Well I think I have resolved the problem. Yesterday I bought a new two way splitter plug and everything seems to be back as normal.
Its like the old adage "If your car won't start, check the battery before you strip it down" :-)
