Leaving pc unplugged from mains

  Meshuga 18:03 15 Aug 06

Am I likely to lose any data or settings If I leave my pc disconnected from the mains while away from home for a week? Thanks.

No, the motherboard's CMOS battery will maintain them for you.

What's on the hard disk will also be there when you get back..:-)

No, in fact it is exactly what you should do, also unplug the modem from the phone line. This will prevent any damage in should there be a storm!

Leaving pc unplugged from mains

also remember to discconnect USB modems, phone cables and aerial cables (if TV card fitted).

All will help to prevent damage if lightning strikes.

No you will not lose data as stated by Stuartli

Many thanks Stuartli, Just wanted to make sure. Didn`t want to risk any storms and lightning while I`m away. Regards, Meshuga.

No. In fact, its a good idea, together with unplugging any mobile phone chargers, speaker/printer/scanner or other power transformer - they all draw current even if the equipment is turned off.

And if you really want to play safe, disconnect any modem cable and/or ADSL modem and/or NTL cable modem from its socket too.

Many thanks also to spargo and Fruit Bat.
