Leave external drive connected?

I have a WD external drive which I use for backups, I have always disconnected it when it is not in use but I would like to leave it connected so that I can schedule backups using Acronis.
Is there any real problem with this? from the reading WD seem to be saying that it is no problem.

Only issue you may have is over heating....

I have two such external drives, one for backups the other for games. They are both permanently on when the computer is on! My tip - switch the drives on first, then the computer. Not had any problems with them, after several years use.

PS - at the close-of-play each day, switch computer off first, then the drives.

Thanks for the replys, It has been on since first thing this morning and is very cool, in fact I can feel no warmth at all.
It automatically switches on when the computer is on.

Hi Technotiger, it says you only need to turn it off if it doesn't turn itself off automatically. Is this OK?

But surely it will be spinning all the time? My Freecom does, that's why I unplug it and put it in a drawer when not doing backups.

One of my Externals has been on for 5 years without any problems. It only spins when it is accessed

Yep!

Hi Graham. I can hear it spin down when it is idle.

Thanks for all the responses, I will leave it connected.
