launching mysql

I've installed msql (5.0 essentials) on my win ME p.c. When I go to the command line client window it asks me for a password (presumably the root password) but I was never asked to supply one during the installation process ?? Whatever I enter (including nothing at all) the window instantly disappears. There may be an error message of some sort but it doesn't last long enough on screen to see what it says.
To try and find out what was happening I installed msql control center and tried to set up a connection using that but it comes back with an error 2003 (whatever that may be)
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Have you tried user name "root" with the password left blank.
