Large read-only files everywher.

Why are there read only files everywhere which take up loads of space, for example one labelled "ProgramData" takes up nearly 4 GB of space.

ProgramData is part of the op system and should be left well alone you should not be able to see it unless you have tick show all hidden files and folders

its XP equivalent is c:Documents and settings \Application Data
