Laptop won't shutdown

My wife clicked on Shutdown an hour ago and all we have is the Logging off screen.

It is a Dell running Vista Basic.

I don't want to physically turn it off because the activity light shows something is happening.

Any suggestions please?

Try pressing .Ctrl Alt and Delete at the same time and see if it will let you into Task Manager and shut down from there.

I tried ctl/alt/del and nothing happened.

What do you mean by 'at the same time'?

If I had this problem with my PC I would physically turn it off.

With a laptop do I just remove the battery?

Taking the battery out didn't work.

When I put it back the machine just 'resumed windows' and went back to the logging off screen.

However I have sorted it.

When I remember what I did I will report back.
