Laptop Won't boot from Boot Disk Argh Argh Argh

My friend has just brought a laptop over Ebay and its not working.
When you try to boot it up without the boot disk you get the message: "No Boot Sector on Hard Drive". When you put in the boot disk you get "DOS Key Installed" and then the A prompt.
Although it says Windows 95 Starting and then tries to find a CD drive; unfortunately the CD-ROM can only be installed when the Floppy isn't - they're Hop_Swappable (its a Dell Lattitude CPi) If you swap over the floppy with the CD-ROM then it says "Volume in Drive has no label"
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Possibly setting the bios to boot from the CD drive may solve your problem .. another option is to create a boot disk with the appropriate cd driver as part of the set up .. hot swapping and proceeding from there

Try click here bootdisk . com for some useful tools

The laptop is booting from the bootdisk and running the Autoexec.bat file on the laptop hence the mention of Doskey installed and the attempt to load windows.

Use a windows 98 startup disk and select start pc without cdrom support, since you cannot have CD + Floppy at same time. this should bring you to the a: prompt. Then use Fdisk from the floppy to check the status of the hard drive which might have been "Fdisked" but not formatted to remove all previous data from hard drive before selling.

Is it supposed to have an operating system installed or not? - because clearly it hasn't, or the hard drive is faulty.
