Laptop won't boot

  ventanas 10:53 21 Oct 09

Dell Vostro 1710 belongs to a friend. Said he was using it normally with a memory stick plugged in, hit the print command to print something on said stick and screen went blank.

I have it here now and it just goes into a loop. Dell logo apears, goes off and appears again etc...
Have tried one of the Vista Cd's here and it won't boot from that either. Copies files but then the green scrollbar goes on and on.

Also it completely ignore attempts to get it into safe mode.

Something must have failed, but mo messages to give any clue.

Grateful for any help.

Check BIOS to see if its picking up the Hard Drive, you could try removing the drive and refitting it. Should be under a Plate at the bottom

Hi woodchip, yes it can see it (Samsung)
I'll have a look underneath later, thanks. 11:34 21 Oct 09

Try discharge and reset the laptop by removing the battery and AC adapter, then holding down the power button over 15 seconds.

HDD controller seems a problem, reseating the HDD may help.

Hope this helps!

Sorted thanks. This is a machine that was surplus at work, I still have three identical machines here, so took the hdd out of another and it booted straight away, put the orginal drive back and nothing. So I guess that's a dead cert. A new hdd.

£33.00 at Amazon

Thanks for the suggestions.
