Laptop wireless in ad hoc mode

I posted on the absolute beginners forum but only got one response. Apologies to mods if this is out of order.I think my problems with my home network are to do with the wireless setup on my laptop. I can only see an ad hoc option and not an infrastructure one. Is this normal? do I need another adaptor to allow me to connect to an infrastructure network properly.

Ticking the "Ad Hoc" box allows the adapter to connect in Ad Hoc mode. The default behaviour with the box unticked is to connect to a Wireless Access Point (an Infrastructure network).
