Laptop will not boot

  Jai 19:04 04 Sep 05

Using a Gateway Pentium3, 600mhz, 20gb HD, XP Pro with a Phoenix Bios ver 25.00. At switch on screen displays "c:\windows\system32\config\system - file missing or corrupt. Repair using startup CD & press r to repair." Tried "R" to repair but no change. The CD is external (connected by USB) as is floppy but CD won't read, spin or eject until USB is disconnected. Can list options for safe mode but won't boot into safe mode. Can list option for last good config but won't boot. Same message for all boot options. Tried to re-set bios to factory default but still same. Is it dead? TIA.

Thanks guys, have looked at both replies & they seem quite logical to follow. Have one further question - will the laptop ever recognise the CD drive without a command prompt or am I about to use the "useless" floppy?

Also, have a look here click here

You'll need read/write access to the HD and if the file system is FAT32, then all you need is a boot floppy- the USB floppy should boot.

If you can get the CD to boot, then you can also use the above procedure for NTFS.

Laptop is now fixed. Plugged in CD. Plugged in floppy. Loaded CD disc. Loaded floppy no.1. Switched on & followed instructions. Ended up with a complete format & re-load of XP. A good thing really as it was rather sluggish. All new spyware, adaware & virus checkers on it now & it runs much better.
