Laptop touchpad

I have a cruddy Advent 6412 laptop (a cobbled together job by PC world). I use the touchpad to control the pointer when I don't have a mouse with me, but after 5 minutes or so the pointer start flicking all over the screen when I try and move it, clicking and opening menus all over the place. I then have to leave it a few seconds, move it again, which causes the hard disk to change speed, and it's ok for a while. This also happens with a PS2 mouse, but not USB. I have probs with overheating sometimes as the case apparently isn't designed for the 1Ghz processor. Any ideas?
