Laptop screen not working.

Just a quick question before he scraps it.Screen packed in so he used an external monitor which worked for about 6 weeks and that has also stopped working.
Is there anything simple that may have caused it and with the price of laptops being so cheap is he just cheaper buying a new one.
Laptop is about 3-4 years old running Vista.Make and model not known at this time.
Not knowing a great deal about computers I was thinking the back light has packed up or maybe just a graphics problem.
What it would probably cost in repairs would go a long way to buying a new one.

Has the external monitor failed or the signal from the motherboard?

If it is the latter then it could be the motherboard has failed and a new screen wouldn`t help anyway.

If the external monitor is not delivering , then bin the lappie, graphics are integrated with Mo-Bo-
But do the firmware[BIOS and all that ] check and before taking the drastic final action

Just had a word with his mother and he has ordered a new Laptop. So that sort of sorts that problem out.
