A friend has asked me if he can install a router to use with a laptop, without connecting the modem to a desktop. Can the router be used without the desktop. I assume he will need a modem of some sort. Any help appreciated.

Normally you plug the modem into the router, and then connect each PC to the router.
So your proposal to use a router & laptop without a desktop PC is perfectly feasible.
If you are using ADSL it would be feasible to use a combined modem/router.
If you are using cable then I think you have to have a separate router & cable modem.
