I HAVE GOT A FUJITSU SIEMENS LAPTOP WITH WIRELESS BUILT IN AND WANT TO CONNECT TO INTERNET AT HOME BUT DONT WANT TO SET UP A NETWORK BETWEEN MY DESKTOP AND THE LAPTOP I HAVE A BELKIN CABLE ROUTER BUT CAN I JUST PLUG AN EXTERNAL CABLE MODEM INTO THE ROUTER AND USE THE LAPTOP TO CONNECT

I think you can plug an Access Point into a spare LAN socket on your existing router. Configure the Access Point from your Desktop and then connect wirelessly through your laptop.

Use some form of encryption to keep your wifi link secure.
