laptop reporting no dial tone

  pharte 20:02 24 Mar 04

I bought a second hand laptop (ipc topnote f, model 200) and cannot get connected to the internet as it cannot pick up a dial tone.

I have tried drivers, bios, upgrades etc. but still no joy.

could it be wired differently on the phone / modem plug ?

I have bought modem cables before which did not work as they were wired differently and would not work on my comp.

I know this sounds obvious but did you try a different cable from socket to laptop? Yes there are some different ones as there are different power lead types mainly for overseas use. It could also be that the modem is actually no good.

will try different cable as soon as I get my hands on one.

any easy way to do check on modem ?

Try control panel/ modems and check the properties wher I beleiev you should get a diagnostic section

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Double-click on Modems. Make sure your modem is highlighted. Click on Properties. On the Connection tab, uncheck 'Wait for dial tone before dialling'. Click OK. Now see if this problem recurs.

Have you checked your dial up settings.
It may be set to dial a US area code number rather than a UK one. Obviously it won't find a dial tone then.

This was a common fault until Microsoft realised there was land on the other side of the Atlantic.
