Laptop power unit light goes out

Bought a DELL Latitude CPx laptop on Ebay. When I switch the laptop off,the green light on the power unit fades and goes out.I have to unplug the mains plug then plug it in again for the light to come back on.The lappy powers up ok again. However, when I run it with the mains unit, the battery status keeps showing zero percent charging. The battery is an excellent one showing 5 lights and able to run the lappy for quite a while. Is there a fault in the lappy itself causing this ?? (I've tried another good PSU and it does the same with that ).

You look to need a new Mains charger. Will it work ok just on the Mains Adapter without the battery? I never have my battery in, only put it in if i am going away with it. It saves the Battery
