Laptop locks up please help

  Boy Zone 12:18 09 Dec 07

I’m having a slight problem right now. My laptop seems to lockup for no reason at all.
When I access the web, it seems to try and load the page and then hangs there waiting for the page to load and this can be for ages. This has also happened with some applications when I try to open them.
I then get a message that the IE or program is not responding, and when I hit the end dialogue nothing happens, again when I try Ctrl Alt and delete action I get a message asking me to end the program but nothing happens. My PC just locks up, and the only way to resolve this is to force a shut down by holding the on/off button.
I’m running the latest IE, and windows Home.
It’s driving me crazy, so any advice would be welcome.

Found this on another forum, the Author of the piece is named at the bottom .....

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. See this

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
