laptop LCD turns white with no image

I've just been given an old Dell Latitude CPi A-series laptop. While re-installing XP (not sure if that is relevant) the screen image faded to white over a couple of seconds. I can see the screen image on an external monitor, so I assume the graphics chip is OK. Switching back from the external monitor to the LCD I see the image for an instant before it all goes white again. I can see no obvious damage to the LCD ribbon cable. I've tried re-staring when cold with no joy. Any ideas?
