I have tried System Restore as well as a Restore facility the come with the Laptop and nothing works when the keys are pressed. The only keys that come up when in word for exapmple are the A,E,I,O,U with a small mark above them (don't know what u call it).

Have you got the Fn key or other number lock set on keyboard?

Shot in the dark.

Have you tried safe mode and last known good configuration.
Tapping F8 on startup should get you into safe mode.

Use the mouse to get to control panel - regional settings and langages, and set everything to English UK.
