What operating system are you using? SFC /Scannow may work on some or System Restore on XP, otherwise, boot from youjr OS CD and run a repair.

im using XP. would running the OS CD repair option solve the problem?

You can, but try short steps at a time. Try going back to a previous installation that loaded - alternatively, try SFC /scannow to see if the problem resolves itself. Finally you can try rebooting with the install CD in place and allowing the system to repair itself. If that fails, I'm afraid you have no alternative but to reinstall Windows -first over the top and then after a reformat.
