where you'll find a selection of machines. It's a god idea not to go too basic with a university student's laptop - apart from coursework it will probably have to cope with music/video files, and heavy internet use.

Don't buy a machine that has less than 1 gigabyte of RAM, and go for more if you can - the new computer will almost certainly have Vista installed, and that can make some serious demands on resources.

You'll be swamped with choice, this is the age of the laptop, and all new machines will have wireless networking built in.

I advise that you buy a security device as well - one of those wire cable things that lock into a special holder on the computer and secure it to a nearby radiator or something. Laptops and halls of residence = opportunities for theft.

All have some fairly decent offers on at the present.

If your daughter is hoping to impress others with her new hardware, then it could cost you. If she has sufficient self-confidence to have one, which is not aspirational, but will do the job in hand. then £400/500 should be quite sufficient.

You will get the same Specification for slightly less if you buy on line.

I suggest that you visit PCW to get a feel for the market and put your hands on a couple of models.

Having looked and felt then Goole for that model, you may well find it less expensive but pay with a credit card NOT a debit card and you can turn to the card issuer if you have problems

Sorry Goole should be Google

Depending on what you can afford, you may be interested in the following.
6 montha ago I bought a Toshiba P100 240 Satellite from PCW (£1299) great machine all the power your daughter will need.
My boss was so impressed with it she bought one last Friday but we got a better deal direct from Toshiba (£899).
Moral don't always by from the high street stores!!!

Cheers for the response,i think even £899 would be far to much though !

It's not a bad machine, my only caveat would be that your daughter would probably get a lot more benefit out of having Vista Home Premium, as opposed to business, for the added media functions.

This one is a little more expensive, but may be more suitable.
